The Great Melt-down

The Great Melt-down

Often, people bring me inherited family jewels to see what is what and what can be revamped and worn. This is the result of one such meeting. Loads of lightweight gold jewelry were melted in a crucible and melted down to make these huge and heavy pieces. Rope chains – insignificant charms – Italian horns – all into the melting pot they went. The big band weighs over 1.25 ounce. The sphere, or it could also be called a gold blob, weighs 3/4 ounce. We torched the edges to give it that extra texture- perfection is not what we were after. The big band is a size 10 and is about 6mm thick and 12-14mm wide. (about 3/16" x 1/2+"). (Translation – MASSIVE ring!) She has a great time wearing it while thinking of all of the little nonsensical pieces that were eliminated for one very significant piece of jewelry.
